Quantum GIS (QGIS) training recently at ILKPKT, Bukit Tinggi

The Federal Department of Town & Country Planning (JPBD) in cooperation with ILKPKT, the training institute of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has been carrying out several QGIS training for agencies under KPKT's wing.

The Federal Department of Town & Country Planning (JPBD) in cooperation with ILKPKT, the training institute of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) have been carrying out QGIS training for agencies under KPKT's wing. 4 sessions have been secured from April-July 2012 attended by participants mainly from local autorities and state planning departments to a ratio of about 4:1 to a class of about 20 participants. The 2 day basic course cover:

  • A brief background on Open Source software
  • A brief theory behind GIS
  • How to download and install QGIS and modules
  • How to create and edite thematic layers base on GIS features
  • How to edit attribute tables for errors
  • How to do spatial analysis using SQL query
  • How to import Google Maps into QGIS
  • How to import GIS layers from OpenStreetMaps into QGIS
  • How to do geocode raster images into vector plans by Georeferencing

The general feedback received after the 2 day course even from hardcore proprietary GIS users is that QGIS is very user-friendly and easy to use.
