Windows Media playback through Moonlight and Firefox for Linux

by eyeoh last modified Feb 13, 2009 03:04 PM

Moonshine is a Firefox plugin that allows support for Windows Media content. When Firefox comes across content advertised as Windows Media, it loads the Moonshine plugin which in turn loads Moonlight.

Moonlight is an open source implementation of Microsoft's Silverlight primarily for Linux and other Unix/X11 based operating systems created by Miguel de Icaza of Novell. The technical collaboration between Novell and Microsoft allows legitimate access to Microsoft's Media Pack for Linux users that will contain licensed media codecs for video and audio. Moonlight is available as a Firefox plugin.

With Moonshine and Moonlight installed Linux users will be able to legitimately access Slilverlight and Windows Media streamed content.

Note that Moonlight must be installed prior to Moonshine.
